Whilst on my way to Italy in the Firenza end of May, the Firenza developed a bit of a noise from the rear axle. Vehicle got me home but alas last night it finally died. A bit of a strip down revealed that the crown wheel and pinion gear are toast (see attached pictures).
There is 11/38 stamped which I believe is a 2000 axle? Correct me I am wrong which I have calculated to be 3:45:1.
Ratio wise this works well with the 1.8 MX5 engine and gearbox.
I think initially I will get myself a replacement axle (await request in wanted section), but looking long run to rebuild the whole axle. I am guessing the following:
1) Gears are unobtainable or do any other vehicles share the same internals?
2) Bearings are going to be difficult to source? I think someone said to cross reference 052 / HPF axle, does anybody have a parts manual that covers this or knows more?
Anyway enjoy the photos, hopefully the next axle will take the abuse the car has been given thus far before I manage to rebuild the axle.
